Both the FHS girls and boys water polo teams participated in the South Houston Regional Water Polo Championship at Sterling High School in Baytown, April 15-17.
The Friendswood Lady Mustangs placed fourth in the region and advanced to the High School State Water Polo Championship in San Antonio, April 23-24. The Mustangs had a strong showing at the regional championship, finishing seventh in the region. The top four teams from each region go to the state championship.

The Lady Mustangs started the tournament Thursday night with a solid 10-6 win against Brazsoswood. Returning to play in the final rounds on Saturday, the Lady Mustangs started the day with a 10-3 loss against Sterling High School. Their third game brought a strong win, 14-2, when the Lady Mustangs defeated the Lady Oilers of Pearland. Finally, after a hard fought final game, the Lady Mustangs lost 15-5 to the Lady Wolverines of Clear Brook High School.
Lady Mustangs headed to state are Morgan Bluth, Kelsey Castro, Kristyn Cox, Rachel Cragin, McKenna Harclerode - Team Captain, Lauren Lundquist - Team Captain, Hailey Lutz, Julia Maloy, Mady Maloy, Brittany Philbrick, Alana Semple, Briahna Yarberry, and Hannah Zawila.
The Mustangs started the tournament Friday playing strongly against the Alvin Yellowjackets, holding their own until the second half when Alvin took the lead and won 14-4. The Mustangs’ second game against the Pearland Oilers ended in a 12-1 loss. Mustangs competing at the regional championship were Nick Bowen, Dean Burse, Jonathan Crutchfield, Stephen Hutzler, Brandon Kearns, Will Kibikas, Alec Maloy - Team Captain, Jared Maloy - Team Captain, Cameron McInnis, Kyle Mitchell, Daniel Rockey, Michael Tomerlin, and Taylor Watson.
At the end of the regional tournament, four Friendswood players were named to the All-Region Second Team based on the playing skills they demonstrated at the championships. Named to the All-Region Team were Kelsey Castro, McKenna Harclerode, Lauren Lundquist, and Alec Maloy.
