News: BP grant encourages good health at Bales
posted: December 10, 2009

BP grants might be responsible for Bales’ students being in better shape and that is a good thing.
Last year, Bales teachers won A+ for Energy Planet-Wide Green BP Grant. The grant was developed and written by Bales teachers Katy Webb, Sharon Dixon and Juliann Brooks.

Bales received $10,000 for science equipment and an iPod Touch Cart used for the study of the planets and the simulation of environments on other planets.
This grant award inspired BP to be a benefactor to Bales Intermediate and provide an assembly on good health free of charge.
The assembly included members from the Texans Football Team and mascot Toro.
The Texans assembly was about exercise and nutrition....beginning each day with a breakfast including a glass of lowfat or skim milk, and exercising everyday.
Toro gave out t-shirts for correct answers to trivia questions about the Texans (such as name 3 football players, where do the Texans play?) and nutrition and exercise questions.  He was funny and active and selected kids from the audience to dance and do exercise/dance movements.
Toro rode a Segway. Players and cheerleaders spoke to the audience from video conference.
“Toro's assistant told me we were one of the best groups they had ever had---for both behavior and enthusiasm!” Bales Assistant Principal Anne Phelps said.
