News: ExxonMobil Ambassadors help Bales students make superballs
posted: January 11, 2010

Students made superballs in the Bales' Science Lab as part of ExxonMobil's Energy Discovery Lab recently.
The superballs captured the students' imagination and connected the rest of the lesson. They learned about the definition of energy, the Law of Conservation of Energy, kinetic and potential energy, as well as gravity and friction.

As difficult as these ideas can be, the students understood them using superballs, ping pong balls, and tennis balls. They worked in cooperative groups, used the Scientific Method, and dropped the balls from different heights.
Students measured to find the bounce height ratio for each dropped ball.
Students involved will now create graphs and compare their data in class.
Not only did students report that the lab was fun, but students also were encouraged to invite parents to participate.
It was a great way for parents to experience Science Lab too.
ExxonMobil volunteers were present both days to help with the lab.
Teacher Katy Webb and her students send special thanks to the Science Ambassadors from Exxon Mobil, Lisa Chisolm, David Otto, Keith Jolibois, Paul German, and Leslie Nguyen, for donating their time.
