World Maths Day competition was held March 3 at Windsong Intermediate.  This day is a global celebration of numbers as students across the world unite to set a new world record in answering mental arithmetic questions. 

           The students played in real-time with students from all corners of the globe.  Students in Rebecca Kilgore's and Janet Gloger's class competed against students in Greenland, India, France, Germany, Russia, Oman, Uganda, United States, Philippines, Italy, Dominican Republic, Australia, South Africa, Ecuador, Malaysia, Egypt, Cypress, Panama, Guatemala, Kenya, Ireland, Switzerland, Jordan, Isle of Mann, Canada, United Kingdom, Qatar, Yemen, Spain, Costa Rica, Cayman Islands, New Zealand, etc. just to name a few.  
           In 2009, two million students from schools in 204 countries took part, answering 452,681,681 questions. 
           World Maths Day challenge involves students from all over the world playing against each other in real-time battles of mental arithmetic using the newly updated Live Mathletics game engine.
 The students have 60 seconds to answer as many mental arithmetic questions possible.  However, if they make three mistakes, they will strike out of the game.  Students score one point for every correct answer. 
           There are five levels of the game and 100 questions per level.  There are three divisions to compete in according to the student's age. 
           Windsong students competed in 9 to 13 year old age group.  The students are automatically matched against other students of a similar age and ability, ie., strong students play against other strong students.
           The students at Windsong Intermediate really enjoyed this math competition!
