News: Four FHS Swimmers Achieve All American Honors

        The National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association has named four Friendswood High School swimmers to the Academic All American Team and one FHS swimmer to the 2009-2010 Swimming All American Team.
        FHS Mustang swimmer Alec Maloy and Lady Mustang swimmers Lauren Lundquist, McKenna Harclerode and Melissa Watson, have all achieved the title of Academic All American.
        The Academic All American honor is given to graduating seniors who have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.750 on a 4 point scale for 7 semesters and have lettered in swimming, diving, or water polo their senior year.

        It is quite an accomplishment to have four Academic All Americans on the FHS swim team in one year.
        In addition, Watson has earned a Swimming All American certificate for her performance in the 100 Breast at the Texas 4A State Swimming and Diving Championship.
        The All American Swim Team honors go to the swimmers with the 130 fastest High School swims in the nation in each event for that year.
        Senior swimmer, Maloy has had many accomplishments in his four years at FHS. He was in several advanced placement classes including US History, English 3, English 4, Government, and Economics. His awards/honors and titles include: National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Academic All American 2010, Swim Team Captain 2009-2010, Water Polo Team Captain 2010, Honor roll 2006-2008, and All A Honor roll 2009.
        Maloy's extracurricular activities included Varsity Swim Team 2006 to present, Varsity Water Polo 2006 to present, Varsity Lacrosse, Link Crew, TSA, Interact, Student Council, Ping Pong club, and football his freshman year.
        Maloy's athletic accomplishments include: State Swimming Qualifier 2009, 1st Team All State 200 yd medley relay 2009, 2nd Team All State 200 yd medley relay 2010, Honorable Mention All State 2010, District Champ 2008-2010, Region Qualifier 2008-2010, Region Finalist 2008-2010, District meet record holder in the 200 yd medley relay 2009-2010, Most Improved Swimmer Award 2007, Most Valuable Player Water Polo 2010, 2nd Team All Region in water polo 2010, Water Polo District Finalist 2009-2010, Water Polo Regional Qualifier 2009-2010, Sportsmanship Award in Lacrosse 2008, and Best in state for TSA conference for three entries in 2008.
        He will be attending the University of Oklahoma where he will major in Aviation with the intention of becoming a commercial airline pilot.
        Achieving Academic All American was icing on the cake for Senior Lundquist, whose many academic honors include AP Scholar with Honor (AP English IV,  AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Government, AP Economics, AP English III, AP Chemistry, AP US History, AP World History); The National Scholar/Athlete Award - US Army Reserve; the Moody Scholar Award; Top 3 percent of FHS Senior class and a $50K Academic Scholarship to Colorado School of Mines. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society, the FHS Art Club and the FHS Math Club.
        Lundquist is a 4-year State swimming qualifier and a member of the 2007 State Champion 200 Free Relay Team as well as a Silver Medalist on the 2007 400 Free Relay Team and holds the Friendswood school record in those events. She was selected First Team All State in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. She is a 4-year Regional Finalist in the 50 Free and 100 Free. She has lettered on Varsity all four years and was Co-Captain her Senior year.
        In addition to swimming, she is a 4-year member of the Friendswood High School Water polo team and Co-Captain for her Senior year.  The FHS Water Polo team finished 9th in the State in 2009 and again in 2010. She was also a member of the FHS Cross Country team in 2009.
        Lundquist will be attending the Colorado School of Mines where she intends to major in Chemical and BioChemical Engineering. She will also be swimming for their NCAA Div. II swim team.
Lundquist can see how swimming at the high school level prepared her for college.
        "Swimming involves a lot of dedication and hard work, and it teaches me how to use my time wisely inside and outside of the pool.  It is also a lot of fun, and I have made lifelong friends through swimming," she said.
        Senior Harclerode, is a 2009 and 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Gold Medalist for her artwork.  In 2009 she was awarded a scholarship to the Western Art Academy where she sold her first sculpture and oil painting. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math and Science Club Honor Society), CLEAR, and LINK Crew.  She was selected by the City of Friendswood to attend the 2009 Community Youth Summit, and is a charter member of the City of Friendswood's Youth Advisory Committee. She was selected as the Junior Class Favorite. And as a senior, she was a Homecoming Queen Candidate and selected Miss FHS.
        She is a 4-year State qualifier and a member of the 2007 State Champion 200 Free Relay as well as a Silver Medalist on the 2007 400 Free Relay.  She was selected to First Team All State in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and Second Team All State in 2010. She is a 4-year Regional Finalist in the 50 Free and 100 Free.  She has lettered on Varsity all four years and was Co-Captain her Junior and Senior years.  She is a member of the 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay that holds the Friendswood school record.
        In addition to swimming, she is a 4-year member of the Friendswood High School Water polo team and Co-Captain for her Junior and Senior years.  The FHS Water Polo team finished 9th in State in 2009 and again in 2010. Harclerode was selected to Second Team All Region in 2010 and she was named Most Valuable Player for the 2010 FHS Girls Water Polo Team.
        Harclerode plans to pursue a degree in Communications from the University of Texas and will attend UTSA this fall as part of UT's Coordinated Admissions Program.
"Swimming has been a big part of my life and the discipline I have learned from hours of swimming has definitely helped keep me focused academically.  And although swimming is an individual sport, I enjoy it most when swimming as part of a team," Harclerode said.
        Senior Watson was excited to add Academic All American and Swimming All American to her list of accomplishments at Friendswood High School. She also qualified as a Scholastic All American in the 100 & 200 yard breaststroke events with the USA Swimming organization. In addition to swimming, she is a member of the FHS Campus Singers and has been selected to be a part of the All-Region Choir all 4 years at FHS. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, CLEAR, Interact, HOSA, Link Crew and serves as a senior mentor in Chemistry.
        Watson is a 4-year State swimming qualifier in the 100 Breast and 3-year qualifier in the 200 Free. She holds the Friendswood school record in the 100 breast, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.  She was selected First Team All State in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 and is currently ranked 5th on the All Time Top 50 Times at the 4A State meet in the 100 Breast. She has lettered on Varsity all four years and was Co-Captain her Senior year. Watson is also a 4-year member of the Friendswood High School Water polo team.
        She will be attending Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia on a swimming scholarship for their NCAA Div. I team where she plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
        “Swimming has taught me that I can achieve great things if I work hard enough for them and it has prepared me for college by teaching me how to manage my time well.” She said,  “My joy in swimming was found in winning for Friendswood High School and my team. I am looking forward to doing the same at Liberty University.”
