News: FHS Band Wins Silver Medal
posted: November 7, 2009

The Friendswood High School “Mighty” Mustang Band won the Silver Medal at the UIL Class AAAA State Marching Band Contest. Competing against 25 other AAAA bands, the 200+ member Mustang Band performed their show entitled “Convergence”, at the Alamodome in San Antonio. There are 225 AAAA bands in Texas.

The Mustang Band has quite a history of top finishes at the state contest. The band has been to the contest five times since 2000. The band is a four-time finalist winning the Silver Medal three times and finishing fourth once. The band has a tradition of excellence unmatched by most across the state.
This year’s show was the most advanced and complex the Mustang Band has ever undertaken. With the use of electronics, the band features 2 oboe soloists, 5 student speakers, and a singer, to enhance the overall presentation by the band. The color guard, under the direction of Ron Barnett and ranked 13th in the nation, adds pageantry to the music and visual presentation by the band.  We have received many compliments from adjudicators and fans alike about how unique the show was. Everyone complimented us on our sound and precision.
The Mustang Band will support the Mustang Football team as they head into the playoffs. After that, the Wind Ensemble, the TMEA Class AAAA Honor Band, will perform in February at the TMEA Convention in San Antonio. The Wind Ensemble is the State Champion Wind Ensemble of all AAAA bands in Texas.
The Mustang Band is under the direction of Gregory Dick, Aaron Brown, Julio Sanchez, and Ron Barnett. The FISD Administration, band parents, and Mustang Band Booster Club provide incredible support for the band throughout the year.
