News: Windsong students feed the homeless in Houston
posted: October 26, 2009

Finding teachable moments in everyday life situations is exactly what two teachers at Windsong recently "cooked" up for their sixth graders.
In class students have been discussing the many great life lessons that Jerry Spinelli inspires one to ponder through his novel, Maniac Magee.

One of the life lessons is being able to have compassion for the homeless and those less fortunate. Maniac, the main character, spends the entire book in search for a home. In that light, teachers Jermaine Sonnier and Autumn Bockart thought it would be great to offer a service project to their students focusing on serving Houston's homeless.
Early Sunday morning recently, students, parents, and teachers met at Windsong and caravaned into Houston to help feed the homeless at Loaves and Fishes.
Approximately 30 students, parents and teachers participated. Students made goodie bags for the homeless, colored placemats for the tables, and then served up the meal.
"The kids really embraced the whole experience. They were able to experience first hand the satisfaction that comes with serving others. It was a great day for all," Sonnier said.
