News: FHS students design, build, try out hovercraft in gym
posted: April 21, 2011

Friendswood High School science students enjoyed a hands on activity making a project not only move but support a team member while doing so. The assignment was to create a hovercraft.
While studying Newton's three laws, Centripetal force, momentum (conservation), impulse, center of mass, friction, mass, velocity/speed, Acceleration, Vectors/FBD, Energy (W/KE/PE), pressure, Torque,  Sound, Voltage/current, and Series/Parallel circuits, teachers Daron Scott and Don McGowan gave their students a creative assignment.
Students were asked to utilize their knowledge of physics to build a hoovercraft capable of traversing a series of obstacle courses in the gymnasium while supporting a team member.

Hovercraft objectives
STUDENTS WILL:

  • Build a hovercraft of original design
  • Analyze the physics behind the motion and operation of the hovercraft.
  • Research the historical development of the hovercraft.
  • Real world applications (past/present/future).
  • Take quantitative measurements and calculations (velocity, force, momentum, etc…).
  • Self evaluate their hovercraft.
  • Offer a new & improved design of the existing hovercraft (based on self evaluation).
