Friendswood High School won the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region Championship title after competing in the Academic Meet in Huntsville.
FHS held on to first place with 260 points followed by Dawson with 204 points with the third highest being Lamar Consolidated with 89 points.
The UIL Social Studies team of Jacob Gruener, Ashlee James, Andrew Mai, and Dylan Zawila placed third with a team score of 202 at Regionals. Jacob Gruener placed second individually and will advance to the State meet. Andrew Mai finished in sixth place individually. This year’s topic was The Space Program with a Focus on the Apollo Program. Coach is Mary Rinehart.
In Spelling/Vocabulary, Kaitlyn Gruener, Noah Kessler, Rita Pham, and Winston Wu placed first as a team and will advance to the State Tournament in May, and Kaitlyn and Winston both medaled individually. Coach is Pepper Smith.
Simone Crotteau placed second in News Writing and will be heading to State.

The Mathematics team placed second. Individually, Winston Wu placed 4th, and Noah Kessler placed 5th. Other team members contributing to our success were Nicole Bui and Brandon Chao.
The Calculator team of Nicole Bui, Ryan Ham, Nathan Nguyen, and Taylor Farrington) placed third, with Nathan Nguyen taking 5th place.
The Number Sense team of Nicole Bui, Noah Kessler, Nathan Nguyen and Roma Pradhan placed second, and Nicole Bui, third place individual, will advance to State for the second year. Coach is Mary Gillespie.
Gillespie also coaches Calculator Applications where Nathan Nguyen placed fifth.
The Accounting team had a score of 736 which gave them a fourth place. Alex de la Fuente placed fourth individually with Heather Cumming placing seventh.

In Poetry, Chris Hailey won first place and was named Regional Champion. Mason Patterson placed second. Coach is Kathy Powdrell.
In Literary Criticism, Laura Bradley, Elisabeth Del Toro, Michael Gregory and Rachel Langdon placed first as a team and will advance to the State Tournament. In addition, Del Toro placed fourth individually and Bradley placed sixth. Coach is Susanne Stafford.
In Computer Science, Winston Wu placed first and Noah Kessler placed third. Both advance to State. Tejas Roysam received seventh place. Coach is Kay Tucker.
The Science Team came in second place. In individual awards, Nathan Nguyen placed third and will advance to State. Brandon Goddard tied for second in chemistry and Taylor Farrington placed fifth individual and second in physics. Coach is Andrea Lee.
In Persuasive Speaking, Kristi Board placed fifth.
In Informative Speaking, Aryn Acosta placed fourth.
The One Act Play placed tenth. |
