News: Friendswood Softball (Week of 2-13-11)

           The Lady Mustangs got off to good start in softball by going 4-2.
           They opened the week by losing at 5A Clear Brook 2-0 in a hard fought game. Clear Brook scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to pull out the win. Caitlyn Garivey had 2 hits and Tori Homer had 1 in the lost. Lauren Massar took the loss on the mound. She pitched 7 strong innings giving up 3 hits while striking out 6.
           The Lady Mustangs then travelled to Marble Falls for their annual BBQ Classic. The Lady Mustangs were able to come away with a second place showing going 4 and 1.
           The loss was in the championship game to 8th ranked Danbury 4-2. The Lady Mustangs beat Alamo Heights 4-2 to open the tournament. The hitting stars were Caitlyn Garivey, Lindsey Davis, Rylie Kohls, and Samantha Sandridge all with 1 hit each. Lindsey Davis and Amber Mills each had RBIís. Lauren Massar got the win going 7 innings giving up 8 hits, 2 runs one earned, and 7 strikeouts. In the next game the Lady Mustangs faced Burnetís JV a late entry to the tournament.
           The Lady Mustangs did not disappoint winning 11-0. The Lady Mustangs collected 9 hits on the day with the big hit coming from Rylie Kohls who hit a grandslam. Other Mustangs contributing to the hit parade were Caitlyn Garivey, Lindsey Davis with a double, Amber Mills, Caroline Hunter, Hayley Spicer-Kendall with 2 hits one of those being a double, Sabrina Yates had a double, and Joan Gray had a double. Caroline Hunter got the win on the mound going 4 innings giving up 5 hits and no runs. Next the Lady Mustangs faced Saginaw a team from outside of Fort Worth. The Mustangs would continue their hot hitting beating them 10-0 in 6 innings.
           The Lady Mustangs would pound out 10 hits, those coming from Amber Mills, Caitlyn Garivey, Lindsey Davis with 2, Lauren Massar provided a 3-run homerun, Rylie Kohls had 2 hits, Tori Homer had 2 hits and one of those was a 3-run blast, and Jackie Dubcak rounded out the hitting. Lauren Massar would get the win going 6 innings giving up 2 hits with 8 strikeouts and no runs.
           The Lady Mustangs would move on to the Championship bracket and face tournament host Marble Falls in a hard fought game the Lady Mustangs would come out victorious 9-6. The hitting stars would be Amber Mills with a triple, Caitlyn Garivey with 2 hits one of those being a triple, Lindsey Davis 2 hits one of those being a double, Lauren Massar with 3 hits one of those being a double, Rylie Kohls with 2 hits, Tori Homer with a double, Samantha Sandridge with 2 hits, and Kelsi Acosta with a double. Lauren Massar would get the win on the mound going 7 innings giving up 6 hits, 6 runs, 2 earned, but got into trouble by walking 8, and the defense let her down with 3 errors. With the win put the Lady Mustangs against Danbury.
           The Mustangs would fall behind early on error to centerfield 2-0, but would rally in the bottom of the 1st on a single by Amber Mills and then a sacrifice bunt by Caitlyn Garivey that turned into an errant throw to first, Amber would end up coming around to score after getting into a run down between 3rd and home and the catcher threw it into leftfield. Caitlyn would also score on the error to tie up the game. It would stay that way until the top of the 7th when Danbury would get a runner on by an error and then get a 2-run homerun.
           That would be all of the scoring. Amber Mills finished with the only hits for the Mustangs getting 2 of them one being a double. Lauren Massar took the loss going 7 innings giving up 4 runs, 5 hits, 1 earned run, and 2 strikeouts. This finishes off the first week of the season for the Lady Mustangs by going 4-2.
           They play their first home game Tuesday night vs Clear Lake. Coach is Kevin Parr.
