The Friendswood swim team competed at the 4A state swim meet held at the University of Texas on February 18 and 19. Only 16 swimmers or relay teams compete in each event from the entire contingent of Class 4A swim teams in the state.
           From Texas, 52 girls’ teams made it to state this year. Although Friendswood only took a small contingent of Lady Mustangs and competed in only five of the 12 possible events, the girls’ team still finished 21st in the state.
           The lone Mustang to make it to state this year, Freshman Justin Bertelsman, competed in two of 12 possible events, but did well enough to place the Mustang’s in 48th place out of 63 boys’ teams competing.
           Senior and Team Co-Captain Kelsey Castro, Senior Meagan Westhoven, Junior Rachel Cragin, and Junior Hailey Lutz made up the 200-yard medley relay that qualified for state. The relay team finished 13th in the state with a time of 1:56.27.
           Freshman Justin Bertelsman was the only Friendswood boy who qualified for the 4A state swim meet. He finished 12th in the 500-yard free and 15th in the 100-yard back. Bertelsman's lone participation for Friendswood still helped Friendswood to finish 48th out of 63 boy's teams with his seven points.
           The 400-yard free relay team of Cragin, Westhoven, Senior and Team Co-Captain Alexandria Taylor, and Lutz finished 14th in the state with a time of 3.51.73.
           Westhoven, the only swimmer to qualify and swim in the maximum number of events at state, also qualified in two individual events, swimming the 200-yard Individual M and the 100-yard Breaststroke. Westhoven made it to finals in the 200-yard Individual Medley and finished eighth, with a time of 2:13.04. Westhoven finished 9th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.18.
           Cragin competed in one individual event in addition to participating in the two Friendswood relays. She finished 15th in the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:01.29.
           Bertelsman competed in two individual events at state, the 500-yard Freestyle and the 100-yard Backstroke. In the 500-yard freestyle, he finished in 12th place with a time of 4:47.97 and finished in 15th place in the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 55.97.
