Representatives of the Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department visited Cline Elementary recently and spoke to kindergarten and first grade students about fire safety.
The visit was part of the Physical Education curriculum under the direction of Judy Shetler.
The firemen talk about fire safety and why home smoke detectors are important. They want the children to understand what to do if a fire does happen at their home. Escape plans are defined and discussed.
The firemen showed their suits and talked about how it is safe from fires but how hard it is to hear noises or voices so children should not hide but let the firemen know they are there if a fire is keeping them from escaping.
The children were given tours of the fire truck and shown the many parts of the vehicle and what each does.
Shetler finishes the special presentation with homework.
“We asked the children to do three things for homework,” Shetler said. “1. Check home smoke detectors and change the batteries. 2. Make an escape plan with your family. 3. Set a meeting place outside, away from the fire.”
