News: Friendswood Jr. High Dedication Held
posted: September 21, 2010

Friendswood ISD recently hosted a dedication and guided tour of their newest campus, Friendswood Junior High which opened its doors for the first time this fall.
The former junior high located on Laurel Drive was composed of the old 1-12 grade campus built in 1939, the round building from 1964, the Main building from 1965 and the “new” building from 1980.
The new campus is located in the back of Centennial Park and contains state of the art science labs, technology, a new and expansive auditorium, a gymnasium with a new approach to personal wellness, sports fields, and classrooms with garden views or views of the park.  The choir and band rooms are large and acoustically enhanced.
For the first time in FJH, a sixth grade campus is part of the design plan.
“What is really wonderful about this campus is that even though it seems really large, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students have classes in three distinct areas of the campus and thus do not mix with the other grades,” Superintendent Trish Hanks said. “We are so proud of this new campus and thank all who came to the dedication.”
All current students, their parents and the Friendswood community were invited to the dedication Sunday, Sept. 19 at the campus. Despite the rain, more than 300 showed up for the event.
Scouts from Troop 452 presented the Colors. Those who participated included Daniel Isaac, Timmy Vance, Timmy Gray, Matthew Diaz, Rush Sopel, Zach Kunkel, and Donnie Vance. Jeremy Dennis served as spokesman for the group.
Superintendent Trish Hanks welcomed everyone and acknowledged groups who had a hand in the creation of the new campus.
From bond committees to school board members, from city officials to architects and construction crews, all were appreciated and applauded at the event.
Board president, Dr. Rebecca Hillenburg was presented a cornerstone by Bay Architects representative Pat Zadow.
Hillenburg, former FJH principal, spoke on how important this campus was to many different groups.
Former administrators were on hand to discuss the new campus with those attending.  Former board members Marta Bourgeois and Dr. David Hearn flew into the area for the event. Bourgeois is currently living in Chicago while Hearn is in Colorado.
FJH Honor Society members served as tour guides while FJH PO members organized and served cookies and lemonade to the guests.
