Swine Flu Currently in the Media
   To date, there are no cases of swine flu in Houston or in Friendswood ISD. Pandemic Flu is caused by a new influenza virus that people have not been exposed to before.  The symptoms are similar to the common flu, but may be more severe and complications more serious. The symptoms include fever, headache, chills, body aches, fatigue, dry cough, sore throat and nasal congestion.  Symptoms may also include nausea and vomiting.

FHS has 9 national merit finalists
  Nine FHS students have been named National Merit Scholarship finalists.
  The National Merit Scholarship Program has now determined which of the 16,000 semifinalists named in September 2008 have met all the requirements to advance to finalist standing in the competition.  All finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2009.
  The 2009 FHS finalists are Ben A. Braun, Bethany L. Burdick, John K. Georgeton, Aubrey A. Hildebrandt, Alexandria N. Ogden Allison M. Piwetz, Nicholas E. Vennekotter, Danielle N. Wilson, and Abigail L. Wolff.
The selection of approximately 8,200 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of more than 15,000 finalists is now in progress.
Kinder and ECPEarly registration for FISD's Early Childhood Program, Kindergarten set for May 7
  Early Childhood Program (ECP) and kindergarten registrations are set for Thursday, May 7 from 5-6:30 pm at the campus the children will attend. ECP is held at Westwood Elementary only while kindergarten classes are at both Westwood and Cline Elementary campuses. More information about ECP
2 FHS artists win at State level
   Gold medals were given to FHS art students recently competing at the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE). Held at University of Houston Clear Lake, the competition awarded the best in art at the state level.
   FHS had eight students who advanced from the Region 4E level to attend the all day event and two of them received gold medals.
   Jake Melgren and Amber Prince are state gold medalists.
   Their winning artwork will be exhibited at FHS in a glass enclosure.
   FHS Art Teacher is Jan Nemitz.
Bales Fine Arts Day
   Bales will have their Fine Arts Day May 8 under the direction of PTO volunteer Melissa Cooney and her committee.
   The group has been working on presentations.
    At this date, the following are on board: Bales Choir, Bales Sixth Grade Drum Ensemble, Faux Painter Karla Boddie, Pianist Carmen Busby, Dance Expressions, FHS Band, FHS Speech and Debate Club, Wranglerettes, and FJH Choir.
   Also included are Artist Sheila Gordon, Houston Grand Opera, HSPVA Concert Dancers, Artist Sherri Lee, Artist Betsy Miller, Photographer Nisa Norwood, Mualist Sara Peters, Artist Ted Reeves,  Musician and Teacher Theron Sharp, Texas Mime Theatre, Jewelry Designer Amber Tiemann and Artist Helen Zawila.
