News: Cline celebrates water safety unit with Water Day
posted: May 16, 2009

Students at Cline Elementary have completed a unit on water safety just in time for the summer to begin. Under the direction of Judy Shetler in P.E., the students were asked to take home summer homework: learn to swim.

Along with swimming, students were given tips on boating safety and how to help those in trouble when a boat goes down or they fall in the water  alone and need help.

“We want our students to have a wonderful summer and the water , whether it be pool or the bay is part of summer fun,” Shetler said. “We want to equip our students with ways to be safe and to offer safety to others.”

To celebrate  the end of the unit,  all Cline students in PE are invited to Water Day.  Students don bathing suits, load water guns and toys and have fun in the sun during PE. Shetler has water toys students borrow and has three plastic pools that continually fill with water. The students learn where the “water free zone” is and that they are not permitted to shoot water  on others above the shoulders.

“The students really enjoy the day and what fun to run around, get exercise, get wet and dry out in the sun,” Shetler said. “We review the water safety tips before they leave and I give them their summer homework: learn to swim.”
