Chess players in 72 elementary, intermediate and high schools competed recently when the Friendswood High School Chess Club hosted a Houston Chess Association Scholastic Chess Tournament at Friendswood High School.

Friendswood High School won first place in the High School Team division. Members were Joseph Le, David Manusov, Zachary Wimer, Corey Smith, Andrew Miller, Ryann Head, David Zurawski, Kyle Murphy, Anna Carlson, and Davis Anderson.
The following students won trophies in their respective divisions: Kyle Murphy, first place; David Zurawski, fourth place; Davis Anderson, sixth place; Ryann Head, seventh place, Andrew Miller, and Zachary Wimer, both sixth place.
“Thanks to the parents and staff who supported the tournament, especially to Tamara and Robert Zurawski along with Tamara and Brian Wimer. Also thanks to Patricia Torrefranca, FHS librarian,” Chess Club sponsor Jim Owen said. “We are very happy so many came to the tournament from so many schools. It shows that chess is a popular and fun game to play. |
