Posted: 8/7/09: Updated guidance for schools for the fall season has been announced by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that offer school officials options for responding to Novel H1N1 Influenza for the 2009-2010 school year.

Harris County Public Health & Environmental Service (HCPHES) Office of Public Information is providing the following link - http://www.flu.gov/plan/school/schoolflutoolkit.pdf  to the communication toolkit for schools.

The purpose of the “Preparing for the Flu: A Communication Toolkit for Schools” is to provide basic information and communication resources to help school administrators implement recommendations from CDC’s Guidance for State and Local Public Health Officials and School Administrators for School (K-12) Responses to Influenza during the 2009-2010 School Year.

AED (Automatic External Defibrillator)
Friendswood has an AED on each campus with the exception of Westwood and Bales.  At this time, those two campuses share one.  The support staff office which houses maintenance, transportation, and custodial employees also has one.  The district intends to purchase more so that Westwood and Bales will each have one. The Junior High and High School each have two on their campuses.

Inappropriate Comments
With the anniversary of the Columbine High School tragedy, it is not uncommon for schools across the nation to encounter challenges of students making inappropriate comments perceived as threatening the safety of others. We have not received any threats involving specific individuals or groups. In the event such threats are made, it is FISD's practice to immediately contact any individual and parents of students who may be threatened in any manner.

FISD works closely with local police and when students make such remarks, they are immediately removed from the campus. However, Friendswood Independent School District is precluded by law from commenting publicly on specific student disciplinary matters. Additional police presence is also employed during such incidents.

Our goal is to provide a safe and secure educational setting and we will take all allowable and reasonable measures to ensure this. We assure our students, their parents, and the community that safety in our schools is taken seriously.

A Message from Superintendent Trish Hanks
FISD offers safe, secure campus environments

It is the mission of our schools to provide quality instruction for our students in a safe and secure environment. We take this responsibility seriously and continuously strive to prepare ourselves to respond to our environment.

A Safety Security Audit of Friendswood High School was conducted last year by the Harris County Dept. of Education Center for Safe and Secure Schools. The other FISD campuses will have safety audits completed over the next two years. The audit consists of a review of policies and procedures, district and campus emergency plans, access, external security, and internal security. Recommendations are then made to the administration for improving safety and security of school.

Annually we review our crisis management plans to ensure that we are prepared for a variety of emerging situations. District personnel are in contact with local, state and national law enforcement and emergency management officials on a regular basis. This allows us to stay abreast of issues that impact the safety of our children and staff.

In dealing with state, national or international crises that might occur, we always balance the need to be informed with the maturity and developmental levels of our students. In our efforts to prepare for crisis situations, we will protect our children from messages and images that will frighten or alarm them.
Please remember that, in the case of a shelter-in-place order, our doors will remain closed and no one will be allowed in or out. This includes parents and staff. Students would be released only after clearance is received from law enforcement or emergency management officials.

Our electronic newsletter, the eLOOK has been very successful in getting information to homes and offices in a timely manner when there is important information to convey. It is our hope that every household in FISD will sign up for the free newsletter and enjoy receiving the frequent news as well as emergency information in their email. The eLOOK joins our website in offering two immediate ways to receive news.

FISD officials maintain a constant watch on changing weather conditions. During hurricane season, the administration stays in contact with emergency management and other city officials and stand ready to take the necessary actions for the dismissal of school and the immediate return of students to their homes if and when such circumstances warrant. The District works closely with the City's Emergency Management Department to prepare for severe weather. Occasionally, the threat of severe weather makes it necessary to dismiss school earlier than usual in order for buses and cars to be able to travel the normal routes.

Announcements regarding inclement weather and possible dismissal will be made on our website, in our electronic newsletter, and on area radio and television stations. Please listen to the City of Friendswood Information Radio (1650 AM), KTRH (740) and KPRC (950 AM) and watch TV Stations KTRK (13), KPRC-TV (2), KHOU-TV (11), and KRIV (Fox 26), local network affiliated TV stations for announcements concerning the dismissal or cancellation of school or the time when classes will be resumed if such dismissal or cancellation becomes necessary.

Health concerns such as hot weather will be addressed immediately through the electronic newsletter, the website and local papers.

Once again, I want to thank you for your cooperation in providing a comforting and encouraging climate for your child. We will honor our promise to keep you informed as situations arise. It is our privilege to provide enriching experiences and confident surroundings for your student.

Sincerely,
Trish Hanks
Superintendent
