News: Cell Phones in School Zones
posted: August 20, 2009

Friendswood Police are ready to enforce the new state law restricting the use of wireless communications devices in school zones.
The law goes into effect September 1 and City public works employees have already manufactured new traffic signage informing the public of the prohibition. The signs are being posted in City school zones prior to the start of school next week. Classes begin for Friendswood ISD August 24. Classes begin for Clear Creek ISD August 25.

Friendswood Police will be issuing warnings for approximately two weeks after the law goes into effect said Capt. Jimmy Holland with the Friendswood Police Department.
The law prohibits the use of cell phones and similar hands-on personal wireless communications devices while traveling in a school zone. Hands free devices are allowed. The law does not apply to public safety and other emergency personnel. An exception to the law does allow citizens to use the devices to contact emergency services.
The offense is a class C misdemeanor and subject to a fine of no more than $200 (plus court costs). A specific fine amount has not been set yet by the Friendswood Municipal Court.
