News: FJH science students study offshore energy

          The energy/oil industry was studied up close recently by seventh graders at Friendswood Junior High.
          Megan Marshall’s classes at FJH in Friendswood ISD participated in the Mobile Offshore Learning Units (MOLU) Pilot Program on December 11.

           Approximately 180 seventh grade students spent an hour rotating through the MOLUs consisting of six self contained components with curriculum based hands-on learning activities about offshore energy topics.
           The MOLUs are a $1.2 million traveling educational exhibit about energy concepts for students developed by the Offshore Energy Center and sponsored by Devon Energy Corporation, Dominion Exploration and Production, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Marathon Oil Company, and Schlumberger.
           Upon arrival at the school, the units are wheeled from the trailer for easy set up in the school’s gymnasium or common areas. Pre-and post-visit materials accompany the units for enhancement of the learning experience.
           The Offshore Energy Center is committee to promoting the offshore energy industry through educational outreach programs, chronicling offshore history and operating the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum. The museum is located on Pier 19 at 20th Street at Harborside Drive in Galveston.
