More than 3,000 art pieces were judged from the 4 East Region.
FHS has 11 students advancing to state.
State VASE winners from FHS are Jamie Albach, Lindsay Barckholtz, Hannah Brown, Annam Butt, Jack Corpening, Emily Dirksmeyer, Jake Melgren, Shoaib Qureshi, Nathan Ritchie, Carson Stanch and Morgan Upchurch.
“Eleven winners is our best ever in this competition so a HUGE thanks goes to all,” Art teacher Jan Nemitz said.
The Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) has sponsored the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) since 1994. VASE is the only art event of its kind in the nation. Students are provided the opportunity to bring artworks created in their art classes to a regional event where they are interviewed by a certified juror who evaluates their work based on a standard based rubric and their understanding of the art processes involved in the development of their artwork.
Only academically eligible high school students in grades 9-12 enrolled in a Texas public or private school Texas can participate in VASE. From more than 13,000 entries last year approximately 1,444 were selected as State Qualifiers and advanced to the State VASE Event held at the UHCL campus in April.
The jurors look for originality of concept, technical expertise, understanding of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and the interpretation of the student's stated intent.
FHS art students attend Clay Day at ACC
The Advanced Art Students spent a day at Alvin Community College recently enjoying ceramic instruction from Dennis LaValley, head of ACC's Art Department.
FHS art students were able to learn how to throw clay pottery on the wheel and also how to do some hand building with clay at the college’s new ceramic facility built last year.
The students each made several quality pottery pieces and were delighted to enjoy working three dimensionally and in a media unfamiliar to them. It was a great Clay Day, according to FHS Art teacher Jan Nemitz.
