News: FHS students win at UIL District contest, advance to Regionals

           University Interscholastic League (UIL) Academic competition at the District level was held at Friendswood High School recently. Students in Friendswood High School won many titles in 14 categories.
           In the Prose and Poetry Contest, Mason Conrad won first place in Poetry with Teagan Batts winning second place in Prose. Both advance to Regional competition. Meagan Holmes received fourth place in Prose and is the Regional Alternate. The Prose and Poetry Team consisted of members Ben Watt, Alex Williams and Chris Haley with sponsor Kathy Powdrell.

           The Ready Writing winners were Cailey Fitzgerald with first place and Arya Karjooy in second place. Both advance. Sponsor is Renae Simons.
           In Debate, Ayrn Accosta placed third and advances to Regional competition and Todd McCormick will be the alternate, placing fourth. Britni Dial is the sponsor.
           The Speech Team advanced six students to Regionals. The Informative Speaking team members won the top three levels. Cailey Fitzgerald placed first, Amanda McKee second and Elliott Landon placed third.
           The Persuasive Speaking team also won the top three and advance. Stephen Feith won first place with Grace Brann second and Johnathan Moore in third place. Melissa Victorick is the sponsor.
Accounting members took first place team and won 1-4 places as individuals. All will advance to Regionals in April.
           Ethan Erenwert received first place with Andrew Bossert in second place, David Robles in third place, and Koby Leblanc in fourth place. Sponsor is Jane Pearce.
           Spelling and Vocabulary Team members include Kaitlyn Gruener, Noah Kessler, Rita Pham, and Winston Wu. They placed first as a team and first, second, fourth and fifth individually.  They will now advance to the Regional Competition in Huntsville in April.
           Sponsor is Pepper Smith.
           In Computer Applications, Noah Kessler won first place with Winston Wu in second place and Andrew Wiley in third place.
           They will compete in regional competition in Huntsville April 24.
           Sponsor is Kay Tucker.
           In Science, the Friendswood team, consisting of Brandon Taylor, Brandon Chao, Taylor Farrington, Bryan Nguyen, Vanessa Rivera and Melissa Glasgow, took first place at the UIL Science district competition. They also won most of the individual awards:
           Brandon Taylor received first place, Brandon Chao second, Taylor Farrington third place and Bryan Nguyen sixth place.
           Top Biology scores included Brandon Chao in second place.
           Top Chemistry scores went to Brandon Taylor in first and Brandon Chao in second place.
           Top Physics scores were awarded to Brandon Taylor in first place and Taylor Farrington in second place. Sponsor is Andrea Lee.
           In Team Current Events, the group won second place. Team members include Lindsay Ricker, Heather Cummings, David Gillespie, Dino Georgeton, and Lindsay Ricker advanced to regionals as the second place individuals. Heather Cummings advanced to regionals as the 3rd place individuals. Sponsor is Paul Tucker.
           In Computer Science, the team swept the written part and won the programming part by 120 points. They had the highest accumulative scores of both the written and hands-on event to earn first place team by beating second place Pearland Dawson by 285 points.
           The individual wins are Andrew Wiley with first place (two questions away from a perfect score), Kyle Wiley with second place, Noah Kessler in third place, and Winston Wu in fourth place. Sponsor is Annette Walter.
           The Social Studies Team of Jacob Gruener, Ashlee James, Patrick Love, and Miles Robinson were named second place team. Miles Robinson placed third individually and will advance to regionals. Sponsor is Mary Rinehart.
           The Literary Criticism team won first place. Individual accomplishment include Lesleigh Balkum with first place, Lindsey Bonnen in fourth, Laura Bradley in fifth place, and Brittany Benson in sixth place. Sponsor is Susanne Stafford.
           In Number Sense, the team placed second.
           Team members are Nicole Bui who individually scored second place and advances to Region, Noah Kessler, Nathan Nguyen, and Diana Kirov.
           The Calculator Team  won second place team. Team members are Nathan Nguyen  who scored third place individually and advances to region, Ryan Ham, Diana Kirov, and David Zurawski.
           The Mathematics team were named to second place. Team members are Noah Kessler who placed second individually and  advances to Region, Adam Coleman, Brandon Chao, and Winston Wu. Sponsor is  Mary Gillespie.
