Windsong Intermediate held their 2010 Battle of the Books on Friday, May 7.
Sponsored by the Windsong Library, the event is historical and librarian Susan Brisbay followed its history in designing her event.
The Battle of the Books began in the early 1930s as a radio program sponsored by the Chicago Public Schools and the Carson Pirie Scott Department Store. In the 1970s, Joanne Kelly, a former participant and school librarian transformed the program into a reading incentive program. |

Once teams were formed for each grade level at Windsong. Students were asked to read a selection of books chosen by Brisbay.
“Our fourth grade team read 32 books in two and a half months, had a book club and took a 64 question qualifier test,” fourth grader Lane Alksne-Liles said. “Then five teams were chosen from that group. It was fun.”
FISD volunteer Charlene Otto, Deputy Superintendent Sherry Green and Dr. Rebecca Hillenburg, school board president were guest facilitators.
The Battle Champions and their coordinators include the following:
In 4th Grade, Bailey Pray, Kira Porter, Alleta Porter and Zeyanna Dhalia were a team with Team Coordinator Valerie Porter.
