News: Red Ribbon, National Character Counts Week underway
posted: October 26, 2009

Red Ribbon Week in FISD is being celebrated from October 21-30.  Again this year National Character Counts Week is celebrated along with Red Ribbon Week.
Character Counts has been a focus for the District K-12.

“We continue to highlight a pillar of character each month. Many activities are planned through out the year in conjunction with the monthly pillars. Red Ribbon Week allows us shine a spotlight on both programs,” Lead Counselor Debbie Woodson said.
Red Ribbon Campaign is kicked off with a Wrap the Town Red pep rally at Stevenson Park October 24. Friendswood’s Mayor Pro-Tem and Superintendent, Trish Hanks sent the high school students off to wrap the town with red ribbons.
Younger students wrapped their campuses.  Groups from each campus performed at the pep rally starting at 8:30 am.
Each campus has planned activities for Red Ribbon Week and National Character Counts Week.
Westwood’s theme is Drug-Free: The Way to Be.  Bales’ and Windsong’s theme is We’re Crazy About Being Drug Free.
Other campuses have a variety of activities all related to anti-drug themes.
Friendswood High School is doing something different this year.  Each day of the week represents a specific Pillar of Character. Various clubs have planned activities that are representative of that pillar.
Red Ribbon weeks continues to be Friendswood’s largest awareness activity with respect to drug use.  All schools continue anti-drug education throughout the year.
The district’s CLEAR (Clean Living Encouragement and Responsibility) membership continues to grow with 625 members at the high school and 351 members at the junior high for a total of 976 district wide.
Windsong, Bales, Friendswood Junior High and the High School are working to launch the Safe School Ambassador Program for students in grades 4-12.
Many good things are happening on FISD campuses with respect to Character Education and Drug Abuse Education.
