News: FHS students to build replica of Berlin Wall
posted: Sept. 22, 2009

November 9 will be the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.  To mark the occasion, the Friendswood High School German program will be "building" and "tearing down" a paper wall in the Senior Mall on campus.  Many FHS classes and clubs from across campus are involved.
Each class and/or club is encouraged to decorate their own piece of the Berlin Wall with something that represents their connection to the time when Eastern Europe was behind the Iron Curtain.

Some examples:  a science class might choose a scientist, who invented something that was never shared with the West; an English class might choose a writer, who could not publish till the wall fell; a music class would choose a musician, who was forced to compose Soviet propaganda music; an athletic class might choose an athlete, who could not represent his country in the Olympics.
Details involving the wall include the following: The wall will be built with six-foot sections of white butcher paper. Bricks that will be created to build the wall are due October 16.
Any group is welcome and encouraged to participate in the "Build" on October 16 or the "Tear Down" on November 9.
“We hope to cover the entire stretch of wall in the Senior Mall to illustrate the breadth of influence the Iron Curtain had on the world.  Our students have never known the Cold War or a time of divided Europe, because they were all born since the Fall,” Counselor Dara Watt said.
