On April 19, 2011, the Bobby Black Field became a reality at Friendswood High School. The baseball field received its new name at a dedication ceremony last night at the final game in district play against the Santa Fe Indians.
After approval by the School Board at their regular March meeting, the new field was dedicated to a coach who put many hours into the sport at that location.
At 6:30 pm, the field was dedicated and renamed to Bobby Black Field. Black was joined by family, friends and former baseball players who reminisced about his days as head coach from 1980-2004.
Black was responsible for building the old field with the help of parents and friends. He was named Coach of the Year in his district 10 times. He was also the first 4A head coach selected to coach the Houston Area High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game.
Black and his teams advanced to the playoffs for 15 seasons and in his last 10 years, he went to the playoffs all 10 years.
He had 18 All-State players. One of his team members, Scott Williamson, played Major League baseball for nine years and was the 1999 National League Rookie of the Year.
To start the last game of the season last night, Black threw in the first pitch.
