News: FHS wins awards at Houston Engineering Fair

           From Friendswood High School, 27 students competed at the 52nd annual Science Engineering Fair of Houston held at the George R. Brown Convention Center from April 7-9.
           From those entered, 14 were honored with awards for their outstanding projects.
           Special congratulations go to Gabriella Quintana who was the winner of one of 11 SEFH Grand Awards.  Gabriella's project was selected from all first place award winners in the individual and team categories to advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Los Angeles on May 8-15.
            Other special awards go to several students. Julia Conger received third place in the 9th grade division in the category American Society for Quality.
            Caroline Landon received the Air Alliance Award in the ninth grade division.
            Derek Janak received the Jacobs Engineering award and the US Navy’s Naval Science Award.
            Jamie McCullough was awarded second place in the ninth grade division for the Texas Center For Superconductivity and the Center for Merials Chemistry award.
            Steven Auzenne was the Houston Museum of Natural Science Summer Internship Finalist.
            Nader Asgari-Tari won second place Senior Division for the Jacobs Engineering Award and American Water Works Association.
           Alexandra Wilson won third place in the United Space Alliance award.
           Madeline Landon won first place Senior Division in the Marine Technology Society, $2000 college scholarship, third place Sr. Div. in the American Water Works Association and U.S. Navy: Naval Science award.
           Jasmine Li was a Houston Museum of Natural Science Summer Internship Finalist.
            In the 9th Grade Division Category Awards, Roma Pradhan won third place in Computer Science, Caroline Landon placed first place in Environmental Sciences, Derek Janak received second place and Jamie McCullough received honorable mention in Physics.
            In the Senior Division Category Awards, Gabriella Quintana received first place in Animal Sciences, Shannon Ellis was awarded honorable mention in Behavioral/SS and Steven Auzenne received honorable mention in Energy/Transportation.
           Michael Laitkep received second place in Energy/Transportation and Madeline Landon was awarded second place in Environmental Science. Karmina Martinez was awarded second place in Medicine/Health.
            Participating students included Janae Bonnen, David Bordelon, Daniel Bradley, Benjamin Burdick, Ryan Bynum, John Coates, Rachel Goeken, Matthew Laitkey, Michael Laitkep, Andrew Mai, Gabriella Quintana, Ariana Rivera, Joe Rogers, Chandika Silva, and Briahna Yarber.
           Special thanks to the mentoring teachers for these students which included:  Theresa Lawrence, Don McGowan, Daron Scott, Arden Curtis, Lucki Kerlegon, Dawne Welch, and Laura Peter.  Chaperones for the science fair included Dawne Welch, Theresa Lawrence and Rebecca Clark.
