This past week the Lady Mustangs reached a high and a low.
On Tuesday the Lady Mustangs took on Manvel High School, a team that has had their number the past few years. In the end, it would be the Lady Mustangs coming out on top 6-5 in dramatic fashion.
The game went back and forth for six innings and both teams had leads throughout the game. In the top of the 7th Manvel would go ahead 5-4, in the bottom of the 7th Lauren Massar would lead off with a single, Rylie Kohls would pop up to first, then Tori Homer would bunt courtesy runner Missy Jesionowski over to 2nd. Hayley Spicer-Kendall would work the count full and after fighting off four pitches worked a walk. Christina Peck was put into run for Hayley, which would pay-off. With two on, Kelsi Acosta lined a 1-1 pitch to the gap between centerfield and rightfield which both runners were able to come around to score to end the game 6-5.

Lauren Massar would get the win on the mound to run her record to 13-7 overall and 5-0 in District.
On Friday, the Lady Mustangs would travel to Santa Fe for the battle of the unbeatens in District. It would not turn out as the Lady Mustangs had hoped losing 8-1.
They would score first in the top of the 1st, Amber Mills would lead off with a walk, Caitlin Garivey would then bunt her to second, the Lady Indians would throw the ball away at first allowing Amber to come all the way to score, and Caitlin would end up on third. The Lady Mustangs would not be able to drive Caitlin in, which would come back to haunt them. The Lady Indians would score two in the 2nd, then three in the 5th and three in the 6th to round out the scoring.
The Lady Indians pitcher would also pitch a no-hitter at the Lady Mustangs. Lauren Massar would take the loss giving up 10 hits, 8 runs 7 of them earned, 2 strikeouts. With the loss Lauren is now 13-8 overall and 5-1 in District. Offensively, Amber Mills would walk twice and Tori Homer and Kelsi Acosta would each walk once, respectively.
The Lady Mustangs finish the first round of District alone in second place.
On Tuesday, the Lady Mustangs JV will take on Clear Falls JV, while the Varsity will use the bye to prepare for Texas City on Friday. It will also be a night at the ballpark for Friendswood Girls Softball Association to have their teams recognized. |
