America's Battle of the Books, ABB, is a reading incentive program for students in grades 3rd-12th. Students read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The competitions are similar in style to the TV series Family Feud, Jeopardy or Whiz Kids styles of competition, but the structure and format of the competitions may vary depending on the needs, resources and personal preferences at various school sites or at the regional/state competition levels.
America's Battle of the Books offers resources to students, parents, schools (public or private), librarians, home schools and international schools.
The Battle of the Books began in the early 1930s as a radio program sponsored by the Chicago Public Schools and the Carson Pirie Scott Department Store. In the 1970s, Joanne Kelly, a former participant and school Librarian transformed the program into a reading incentive program and schools have been adapting it for their needs ever since.
A list of 28 top quality, age-appropriate books are selected. Students who are interested in participating will read a selection of books from the 2010-2011 Battle of the Books list. The list is finalized and is available at the Friendswood Public Library.
Books are available at the Friendswood Public Library and at Windsong Intermediate School Library.
Deputy Superintendent read the questions for the teams this year.
