As fans leave Henry Winston Stadium after a Varsity Football game, often their food wrappers, napkins, drink cans and programs are left under seats. Many do not realize that one custodian has the job of clean up of the stands and often that clean up goes into the early morning hours.
Under the direction of Engineering teacher Amber Smith, students from numerous clubs at Friendswood High School gathered after the recent home football game to offer service.
“The trash left behind in the stadium seating is appalling. If you dig a little deeper you find out that the stadium is cleaned top to bottom by one custodian, Letty. She sometimes cleans until 4:30am. Often she then has to be back early on Saturday to open up or set up for another activity,” Smith said.
It was that knowledge that made students and adults want to help.
So, trash bags in hand and smiles on faces the volunteers began cleaning and in about one hour completed what would take Letty six to eight hours by herself, Smith said.
Faculty members such as Rob Wise, Al Tag, Barbara Gruener and Smith helped. Students participated representing various clubs: Technology Student Association(TSA), Interact, Recycling Club, and others.
“We also had students with no affiliation. They just wanted to help,” Smith said. “We had younger siblings and several parents, Edeen, Grueners, and others I didn't know.”
The group members are planning to clean after every home football game.
“We're hoping we'll get twice or four times as many tomorrow and get it done in 15 minutes. We're calling ourselves stadium stewards. Next step T-Shirts,” Smith said.
The group collected about 25 bags of trash and about 8 bags of recyclables.
