The community of Friendswood supports its public schools and the area is currently supporting the fall drives of the Friendswood ISD Education Foundation, making the group that helps children its charity of choice.
Since 1999, the Foundation has put more than $910,000 into the FISD schools as well as putting close to $1 million in an endowment to continue to help for years to come.
Currently, the 2010 Community Honor Roll is underway and supportive signs and decals are popping up all over the city. The sign and decal declare their devotion to supporting the Foundation. The funds will be part of this year’s donations with the spring grants being given to teachers and campuses around April or May. Last year, the FEF presented $100,000 in grants to the six campuses.
Also underway are memberships to the Mustang Association. This is a group of students in k-12 who give $5 to put together a grant “from kids for kids by kids.” Each year the group grows larger. This year each member will have Mustang dog tags, a popular celebrity accessory for the well dressed fall student.
For those who want direction in giving and specifics, a Wellness Transformation Grant set to change the Physical Education Department into a Personal Empowerment department is planned first for 4-8 grades. The first 30 community members who present the FEF with a check for $200 for the grant will be part of a private holiday cooking class with area known Chef Ann Curry at the Green Center. Flavors of Fall will be presented and the 30 will have hands on experience in the creation of a fall dinner masterpiece. The 30 will also present a check for $5000 to the school district to begin their Wellness grant.
On Mondays in September, the Foundation is asking the community to give their kitchens a rest. Joe’s Barbecue in Alvin is giving 10 percent of the gross profits back to the FEF. Ribs, anyone?
