Friendswood High School Drama Department presents Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and adapted by Scott Davidson.
Louisa May Alcott's 1868 endearing tale Little Women is beloved by mothers, daughters, and sisters everywhere. It is a coming-of-age story about family, love, loss, and struggle set in mid-nineteenth-century New England.
The play opens on Christmas Eve and follows the four young daughters of a Union army chaplain through six years. In that time, the girls find their lives touched by love and loss as they grow into the women they dream of being.
The young woman at its center, Jo March, is a fictional character based on the author. Jo is bold, brave and loyal. She loves to run and she wishes she were a boy, so she could speak her mind, go where she pleases, learn what she wants to know and be free.
With the majority of dramatic literature centering around male characters, Director Amy Thornton wanted something different yet universal.
"Alcott’s book touches people on so many levels. It helps us understand the universal truths in the world like laughter, jealousy, curiosity, anger, fear, family, romance, and grief. I also love that, in the male dominated field of dramatic literature, here is a tale about women and girls. This cast has 11 females and only 3 males. It is a completely different dynamic!” Thornton said.
Little Women features Anna Drake, Elisabeth Del Toro, Lindsey Bonnen, Grace O’Donavan, Tatum Garvin, Megan Mills, Max Bowen, Jon Olansen and Tommy Stuart.
The students have been invited to perform at Moody Garden’s annual Festival of Lights on December 1. The show will begin at 7 pm on Palm Beach and is included in admission to the festival. The run will continue in the Friendswood High School Studio Theater December 2 & 3 at 7 pm and December 4 at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $7 at-the-door.
