A Character Connection at Westwood
Frances Levisee from Texas First Bank visited first-grade teachers at Westwood recently with a special surprise that made a character connection. She presented them all with a complimentary copy of the book, Don't Laugh At Me, by Alan Shamblin and Steve Seskin.
Because of its strong anti-bulllying message, this book, she told the teachers, is being made available to all first-grade teachers in the districts who have an elementary school near a branch of their bank. The bank representative also left a copy for our library. The book, published by Tricycle Press, has an accompanying curriculum, available at their website www.dontlaugh.org. Westwood thanks Ms. Levisee and Texas First Bank for their partnership and commitment to accepting and celebrating differences and building strong character.

Westwood donates to FRWD Fire Department
Daniel Quentin, first grade student at Westwood Elementary, was proud to present a check for $574.47 to Captain Hagerty of the Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department. As a result of a Family Math Night collection of pennies for which the "best estimator" would get to choose the recipient, Daniel Quentin emerged the winner. He chose the Volunteer Fire Department because, "Volunteers don't get paid any money." Captain Hagerty was pleased to accept the check, noting that Friendswood will soon have two brand new fire trucks to outfit with equipment. Daniel looked quite proud to be able to have his school donate to this cause which keeps our community safe.
Warbling Warbles at Westwood

Where did Wednesday Warbles at Westwood Elementary get its name?

A number of perching birds are called warblers.

They are not particularly closely related, but share some characteristics, such as being fairly small, active and insectivorous.

A hard-to-identify-to species, they are mostly brownish or dull greenish in color, of small size, and interestingly enough, more easily seen than heard. Westwood's warblers are quite the opposite. On most Wednesdays, it's a song with a character theme that resounds in the gym before school, but the Wednesday before spring break it was the melodic sound of the recorder.

Third-grade students serenaded the crowd with Hot Cross Buns, Lucy Locket, and Starlight, Starbright.

As an encore, those students who have earned their black belt in Recorder Karate treated the audience to Ode To Joy.

Way to go, Warblers!

Cline 3 grade learns measurement

Dallas Bertasz's third grade class at Cline Elementary  are currently learning about the different units of measurement and the methods and tools used to measure through hands-on experiences.

In one measurement activity the students worked with math partners to measure a given list of objects.  Pictured  are students tracing one foot, and then measuring its length using a ruler - recording the results in both inches and centimeters.  In the second picture, the math partners are measuring the circumference of their head and their wrist.  At the beginning of the measurement lesson, the class discussed tools for measuring and it was discovered that using a ruler would not accurately measure around objects.  The class problem solved and came up with a solution use yarn to measure around the object first. Then measure the yarn with a ruler; again, the student recorded the results in both centimeter and inches.
