News: Westwood hosts amazing Diaper Derby
posted: December 15, 2008

To complement CARING, FISD's character focus pillar of the month, Westwood Elementary held its annual Holiday Service Project this week to benefit their littlest newborn neighbors!

And what a benefit it was.  Actually, under the direction of  music teacher and Character Crew Chair, Laura Rachita, it was a win-win situation because second graders got a math lesson out of the deal by sorting and counting donated items as they came in.

They report that the Westwood family collected a total of 2706 diapers, accompanied by 5580 wipes.

Students also brought in 40 bottles of lotion and/or soap, 116 containers of baby food, and 47 cans of baby formula.

Split between the Friendswood Center for Pregnancy and Christian Helping Hands in Pearland, these Derby Donations will surely bring happiness and comfort to many young families for weeks to come.

"Putting caring into action, especially at a time when we're being asked to give so much, that's what living out our character is all about.  Happy December!" Counselor Barbara Gruener said.
