News: Speck (Class of '64) to be honored as a Distinguished Alum
posted: February 10, 2009

Responsibility and Randy Speck go hand in hand.  FHS graduate, Class of 1964, Speck has served his community and his nation representing others and thinking first of others’ welfare.

He is currently one of six Distinguished Alumni chosen to be honored by FHS alumni and the Friendswood ISD Education Foundation at their annual fundraiser March 7. The True Blue Evening honoring the six will take place at Space Center Houston in the Astronaut’s Gallery.

Speck will be honored for his achievements and will represent the Character Counts trait of Responsibility. The six honorees each represent one of the six traits and will be depicted with their trait on a Character Counts! poster placed in all classrooms in FISD for a year.

After graduating summa cum laude from Abilene Christian University in 1968, Speck worked for five years for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and received the Chairman’s Outstanding Achievement award for a groundbreaking case of employment discrimination that opened job opportunities for women throughout the Bell telephone companies. He was featured in several books about this precedent-setting case.

He graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1977 and is currently a senior partner and head of the energy practice for Kaye Scholer LLP, an international law firm with more than 500 attorneys. Law practice focuses on energy litigation, primarily representing state governments.

Among his many professional achievements, Speck represented Alaska in a case examining the $8 billion Trans Alaska Pipeline, represented California, Connecticut and Maine in investigating the costs of nuclear power plants, assisted Connecticut and Maryland in developing new regulatory structures for electric companies,  and served as an expert on decommissioning nuclear power plants.

Speck authored numerous articles and book chapters on a wide range of legal issues, including the art of construction projects and the creation of new regional electricity markets. Speck is recognized by his peers as a “Super Lawyer” in the energy field.

Speck and his wife Samantha are active in the local District of Columbia community, including serving as precinct captain in get-out-the-vote efforts for several local candidates. He and Samantha actively support the DC Police’s efforts through Camp Brown for inter-city youth. Samantha is a community leader as an elected Advisor Neighborhood Commissioner and Chair of the Police Citizens Advisor Council.

They have a daughter, Laura Michael who is the Director of Operations and Client Services for a “branding” firm in Northern Virginia and son-in-law Jeff Michael who is a graphic designer for a national engineering firm.

Speck’s parents are K (deceased) and Esther Speck, who have lived in Friendswood since 1952; K was on the school board, and Esther was President of PTA.  His siblings include Larry (previous Distinguished Alumnus and architect in Austin), Lisa Sargent (teacher at FHS), and Melanie Bacom (retired teacher, now living in Friendswood), all FHS graduates.

Responsibility in action is practiced every day in Randy Speck’s life and career.
