Maddy Landon, Audrye Williams, Cailey Fitzgerald and Seth Zawila will advance following their win at the District Cross Examination meet.
The students qualified for the state meet by placing first or second at the UIL Cross-Examination District meet held at Manvel High School Feb. 10 and 11, 2009.
Landon and Williams placed first while Fitzgerald and Zawila placed second.
“UIL debate competition develops skills in our students that directly prepare them for real world situations by challenging their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities,” Jana Riggins, UIL Debate Director said.
UIL academic contests range from social studies to accounting and from computer science to poetry interpretation. Of the 2.2 million students who participated in UIL activities last year, 627,000 competed in one or more of the 23 general academic contests.
Through participation at the UIL Academic State Meet, students qualify for Texas Interscholastic League Foundation scholarships. Since its inception in 1954, the TILF has provided over $22 million to more than 16,000 students. The TILF has over $8 million in endowed funds and receives direct scholarship grants, each year of more than $800,000 from foundations, individuals and corporate sponsors throughout the state.
During a typical academic year, TILF will disperse more than $1 million to more than 600 students attending colleges and universities throughout Texas. One hundred percent of each dollar TILF receives goes directly for scholarships, with no administrative or other expenses being deducted. While not all applicants can be awarded a scholarship at this time, the TILF Board continues to pursue additional funding. |
