News: Swimmers swim for gold, Ladies win 7th consecutive Region Championship

      Region qualifiers on the FHS Mustang and Lady Mustang Swim Teams swam for the Gold at the Region 6-4A Swimming Championships on Feb 13-14 at the University of Houston. It was an exciting meet and the Lady Mustangs won their 7th consecutive Region 6-4A Championship Title.

     The Lady Mustangs scored 171 points to take the title again while Rosenberg Lamar Consolidated finished second with 102 points.
     The Mustang men finished third behind Richmond Foster and Rosenburg Lamar Consolidated with only 16 points separating first and third. They faced much tougher competition this year due to the Region 6 realignment.
      To qualify for the State Swimming Championships, individual swimmers and relay teams must win the Gold medal in their events at the Region Championships or have one of the eight fastest Region final times in the state that didn't win a gold medal.
     Gold medal winners for the Lady Mustangs were senior Caroline McElhany with three Gold medals (200 IM, 100 Fly & 400 Free Relay), junior Melissa Watson with four Gold medals (200 Free, 100 Breast, 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay) and sophomore Alexandria Taylor with one Gold medal (500 Free).
      Gold Medal winning relay teams were the 200 Medley Relay team of Rachel Cragin, Melissa Watson, Lauren Lundquist & McKenna Harclerode and the 400 Free Relay team of Melissa Watson, Kelsey Casto, Caroline McElhany and Meagan Westhoven.
      Winning Gold medals for the Mustang men were senior Cole Cragin with 3 Gold medals (100 Fly, 100 Back & 200 Medley Relay) and the Gold medal winning 200 Medley relay team of Cole Cragin, Jared Maloy, Alec Maloy and Daniel Rockey.
      Silver medalists included Alexandria Taylor in the 200 Free, Meagan Westhoven in the 200 IM, Jason Yarberry in the 200 IM, Jarod Maloy in the 100 Breast, the Ladies’ 200 Free Relay team of Caroline McElhany, McKenna Harclerode, Lauren Lundquist and Rachel Cragin, and the Men’s 200 Free Relay team of Cole Cragin, Jarod Maloy, Daniel Rockey and Jason Yarberry.
     Silver medalists with fast enough times to get a "call up" to the State Championship were Meagan Westhoven (200 IM) and the Men’s and Ladies’ 200 Free Relay teams.
     Bronze medalists included Lauren Lundquist (100 Free), Kelsey Castro (500 Free), Jason Yarberry (500 Free), and Rachel Cragin (100 Back).
     Other Mustang swimmers finishing in the top 8 at the Region 6 Finals included Kelsey Castro (4th - 200 Free), Alana Semple (5th - 200 Free), Daniel Rockey (6th - 200 Free), Nick Bowen (7th - 200 Free), Will Kibikas (8th - 200 Free), Hannah Livesay (5th - 200 IM), Keelin O'Brien (6th - 200 IM), Lauren Lundquist (5th - 50 Free), McKenna Harclerode (6th - 50 Free), Jarod Maloy (6th - 50 Free), Rachel Cragin (4th - 100 Fly), Brittany Philbrick (8th - 100 Fly), Dean Burse (7th - 100 Fly), McKenna Harclerode (8th - 100 Free), Daniel Rockey (7th - 100 Free), Alana Semple (6th - 500 Free), Taylor Watson (6th - 500 Free), Will Kibikas (8th - 500 Free), Hannah Livesay (5th - 100 Back), Kennedy Metcalf (7th - 100 Back), Kyle Mitchell (6th - 100 Back), Michael Tomerlin (8th - 100 Back), Meagan Westhoven (4th - 100 Breast), Kristin Cox (6th - 100 Breast) and the Mens’ 400 Free Relay team of Will Kibikas, Nick Bowen, Jason Yarberry and Alec Maloy (5th).
      The State Championship will be held at the University of Texas on Feb 27 & 28. The Mustang State Championship Team will be comprised of swimmers Cole Cragin, Jason Yarberry, Jarod Maloy, Alec Maloy, Daniel Rockey and Nick Bowen. The Lady Mustang State Championship Team will include Caroline McElhany, Melissa Watson, Alexandria Taylor, Meagan Westhoven, Lauren Lundquist, McKenna Harclerode, Rachel Cragin, Kelsey Castro, Hannah Livesay and Kennedy Metcalf.
