Girls from Friendswood ISD, Dickinson ISD, LaPorte ISD, Galveston ISD and Clear Creek ISD were part of the program that had them enjoying a wide range of speakers.
Super Sci-Tech Saturday held February 7, 2009, seeks to introduce math, science and technology careers as viable possibilities for female students in grades 6-8. Held every two years at University of Houston Clear Lake, the event offers hands on activities by women in a variety of careers who discuss what it takes to have that career and why it is rewarding for them.
“FISD has enjoyed many of these workshops and our girls learn so much. We want our girls to get a chance to explore the world of opportunities available to them in careers in math, science and technology,” FISD Superintendent Trish Hanks said.
The planning committee created a fun-filled day for girls, including hands-on workshops that ranged from how to build a rocket to how to save a life; inspirational messages from women who excelled in career fields from Astrology to Zoology.
The day included a keynote address, three workshops, breakfast, lunch, a tee shirt and a goodie bag.
Business partners with Friendswood ISD sponsored this year’s tee shirts for all the girls attending. FISD thanks Bay Architects, Brae Burn Construction Co., Brooks & Sparks, Inc., Robert Hansen and Associates, HomeTown Bank of Friendswood and Kalmans Marshall Engineering.
Major sponsor for the event was Lyondell Basell with assistance from Boeing, United Space Alliance, Barrios Technology, and INEOS NOVA. |
