News: 86-year old author introduces book to FHS students
posted: January 12, 2009

Story by FHS journalism student Miranda Jean, and pictures by student Lydia Duncombe. Bergeron came to FHS to present his book to the library.

Cliff Mabry, FHS English teacher, is in one of the pictures because he used to be his neighbor.

Never say never…

With shining eyes and a smile full of pride, Denis E. “Don” Bergeron presented his first book, a memoir titled In Front of Patton, to the Friendswood High School library. At the age of 86, this writer’s career has just begun.

Bergeron served in World War II for nine months in 1945 where he kept a diary of the events that occurred there. In December 1945, Bergeron returned home where he married his “one and only” and built his family, now including his five children and five grandchildren.

“When the war was over, everyone concentrated on building a family,” Bergeron said. “With the inventions of television and better automobiles, the war took the back seat.”

After 63 years, the manuscript he typed on an old German typewriter is finally a complete book, and he couldn’t be happier.

“As I was getting ready to publish, I thought, ‘the publisher will know more about me than I know about myself’,” Bergeron said. “There is just this great sense of pride, I mean, how great it is to be a legacy in my family and to share my experience.”

Bergeron was brought to the Houston area following the war when he entered the space program. His next project, a book about this experience titled My Second Love, is currently in the making.

“I have to admit, I love the attention!” Bergeron said.

As In Front of Patton hits the shelves, Bergeron anticipates the continuation of his next book and the mysteries of the future.  Ideas flow when he walks one and a half miles each day

“At my age, the more you do, the more you can do,” Bergeron said.
