News: FHS Speech team takes first at Clear Brook tournament

The FHS Speech and Debate Team took first place overall at the Clear Brook High School Debate Tournament recently. Every FHS student who competed earned a medal or trophy and the group had a finalist in every event.

The brother/sister team of Esther-Raquel and Johnathan Moore took second place in Novice Cross Examination Debate.  The topic this year is Alternative Energy Incentives.

Stephen Feith and Jacey Daniel each finished in the top 16 debaters in Lincoln Douglas Debate (refutation, style of delivery, organization)  with Jacey taking second place Top Speaker overall. The topic this month is "Should felons retain the right to vote?"

In the individual events category, FHS students realized how hard work can pay off and each came home with a trophy/medal, according to sponsor Melissa Victorick. 

In Original Oratory (students write and memorize a 10-minute speech about a societal issue) Megan Brann placed fourth, Kristi Board finished fifth, and Jacey Daniel placed seventh.  Lesleigh Balkum was a semifinalist.

In Extemporaneous Speaking, students draw a random topic on a current event and take 30 minutes to write a speech using resources collected throughout the week.

Stephen Feith placed third and Katie Henry placed fifth in Domestic Extemp. Megan Brann placed second and Seth Zawila placed sixth in International Extemp, and Audrye Williams won first in Novice Extemp.
Jeff Allison, Rebecca Dockall,  Shahin Firouzbahkt, Cailey Fitzgerald, and Johanathan Moore were all semifinalists.

In Poetry Reading Lesleigh Balkum placed second and Rebecca Dockall placed fourth.  Kristi Board was a semifinalist. Balkum also placed third place in Prose Reading as Audrye Williams placed the same in the novice division.

Dramatic Interpretation had the following results:  Lesleigh Balkum placed first with her interpretation of My Sergei and Rebecca Dockall finished sixth.  Katie Henry was a semifinalist.

Friendswood High School had three of the six finalists in Humorous Interpretation.  Kristi Board finished second with Mulan, Jeff Allison with Enchanted placed fourth, and Lesleigh Balkum finished seventh with Angry Housewives.

In Duet Acting, the team of Lesleigh Balkum and Jeff Allison placed eighth overall.

In Impromptu Speaking, Kristi Board received first place and Johnathan Moore placed seventh.  Jeff Allison, Katie Henry, and Seth Zawila were semifinalists. 

In the event of Group Improvisation, a consolation event, Team EPIC (Cailey Fitzgerald, Shahin Firouzbahkt, Katie Henry, and Seth Zawila) placed second.

The team welcomed a second coach this year, Britni Dial-Lee.
