posted: January 12, 2009

Jan 18 deadline for FISD 6-8 gr girls to sign up for career workshop Feb 7 at UH-CL

It's coming! A special workshop for GIRLS ONLY in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes in Friendswood ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Dickinson ISD, Galveston ISD and LaPorte ISD

Super Sci-Tech Saturday set for February 7, 2009, seeks to introduce math, science and technology careers as viable possibilities for female students in grades 6-8.

Held every two years at University of Houston Clear Lake, the event offers hands on activities by women in a variety of careers who discuss what it takes to have that career and why it is rewarding for them.

January 18 is the deadline for online registration.

“FISD has enjoyed many of these workshops and our girls learn so much. We hope the attendance is high this year and that our girls get a chance to explore the world of opportunities available to them in careers in math, science and technology,” FISD Superintendent Trish Hanks said.

The planning committee has created a fun-filled day for girls, including hands-on workshops that range from how to build a rocket to how to save a life; inspirational messages from women who excelled in career fields from Astrology to Zoology.

Approximately 1000 girls will attend.

Cost is $15 for the day from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. The day includes keynote address, three workshops, breakfast, lunch, a tee shirt and a goodie bag.

Business partners with Friendswood ISD sponsored this year’s tee shirts. FISD thanks Bay Architects, Brae Burn Construction Co., Brooks & Sparks, Inc., HomeTown Bank of Friendswood and Kalmans Marshall Engineering,

Students in FISD have heard about the conference through their science classes. A video is also available for viewing.
