News: FISD new seventh graders explore careers at Vital Link
posted: June 19, 2009

Career planning has been the focus for a summer program involving 44 incoming seventh grade students in Friendswood ISD. Vital Link, a career-shadowing program has offered students a week-long glimpse into job possibilities for their future.

The purpose of the program was to let students see how the world of work really is. It is a fun, exciting look into the future, and a connection between  classroom learning and working.

Each student selects a career they would like to pursue and then, if selected, explores a job looking at it behind the scenes. The program was held in June, under the direction of Ann Mulder, Director of Career and Technical Education and Technology Applications & Gifted and Talented Coordinator at Friendswood High School.

This year’s students shadowed in areas of interior design, space exploration and engineering, art, marine biology, law enforcement, veterinary science, hospital based medical careers, architecture and meterology.

“Our thanks go out to the many businesses that continued their support of this great program!” Mulder said.  “All were wonderful hosts for the students!”

These businesses included Boeing, NASA, Space Center Houston, National Weather Service, Heritage Animal Hospital, Memorial Hermann Hospital SE, Creekwood Veterinary Hospital, Pet Vet Animal Hospital, The Banfield Clinic, Alvin Community College, Jacob White Construction, Friendswood ISD, City of Friendswood Police Dept., Armand Bayou, Ethan Allen, and the Art Institute.
