Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education is a non-profit organization formed to meet the increasing need for wildlife assistance. Birds of prey was their topic for Bale’s Science Day.
Whales on Wheels is an organization dedicated to understanding and conserving marine mammals through rescue and release, research and education. A mock mammal stranding was set up in the library to teach students what to do if they find a stranded mammal on the beach.
The Houston Zoo discussed Texas animals and along with specimen and examples of egg sacks, and a buffalo hoof, a live turtle and ferret were also displayed and discussed.
Safety awareness was Texas New Mexico Power’s topic and FHS Science Club created cola geysers for the students as a scientific experiment.
Mad Science opened the day for the fifth grade. Hilarity and science blend with the Mad Scientist who started with a card trick and worked his way into experiments.
Special K-9s, the Museum of Natural Science, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Centerpoint Energy also presented for the fifth graders.
Scooby, a special canine, makes a living with his nose. He and his owner showed students his tracking abilities. He has been trained to find individuals lost during a natural disaster.
Physical science demonstrations were given by the Museum of Natural Science.
Dr. Marcelo Vazquez from the Brookhaven National Laboratory spoke to Bales students about analogs and their use in space exploration.
Gas Safety at home was discussed by Centerpoint Energy.
FHS FFA animals and their owners were on hand for the sixth grade students as well as Lunar and Planetary Institute, Gulf Coast Turtle Society, Croc Encounters, and the Moody Gardens Trunk.
Susanne P. Schwenzer from the Lunar Planetary Institute spoke about he efforts of LPI to educate students about space and the moon.
A representative from the Gulf Coast Turtle discussed turtles that inhabit rivers, ponds and land in the Friendswood area. Several live turtles were displayed and discussed.
Croc Encounters from Angleton presented live representatives from the crocodilian family and explained the differences between the different species.
The Rainforest Trunk from Moody Gardens Trunk tours was opened at Bales and the future of the world’s rainforests was discussed.
