News: Cline walks for Diabetes
posted: March 1, 2009

It is $27,000 and counting for Cline Elementary as PE teacher Judy Shetler continues to count donations made for their annual Walk for Diabetes held Feb. 27 and attended by every student and teacher in the K-3 grade campus.

Last year, Cline was named to second place in the nation for donating $30,000 from the walk event. Mary Baumann, National Director in the American Diabetes Association joined Shetler and students today to present a plaque to the campus for their second place victory and to cheer on this year’s walkers.

“It is quite an achievement for Cline Elementary in Friendswood ISD,” Baumann said. “In fact, Cline who is doing this for the seventh year has donated more than $1 million to help find a cure for a disease that affects more than 23.6 million Americans. Three attend Cline Elementary,” Baumann said.

Before the 800-plus students started their walk, Shetler had the top donors come to the officer where they were given a medal for their hard work. Baumann presented the plaque to the group and Shetler and then the walk began. Moms, Dads, grandparents, younger siblings and some pets joined the large group as it made its way to the Friends Church and back. The route had been expanded this year and all who started, finished the walk.

“I am proud of my students and thank them all for collecting donations and for participating in the walk,” Shetler said. “This year has been hard for many beginning with Hurricane Ike in September. I am grateful for all the donations and thank each community member from the bottom of Cline’s heart.”
