News: 22 FHS compete in Houston Science Fair, 3 advance to State

Three FHS science students are advancing to the State Science Fair in San Antonio March 28 after 22 students competed in the Houston Science & Engineering Fair recently.

State qualifiers include Ben Braun, Daniel Rockey and Vanessa Rivera. Braun placed first in Computer Science and is recipient of the Intel Award in Computer Science. He received $1,000.  Rockey received first place in Earth/Space Sciences and was the recipient of the Houston Museum of Natural Science Award and the US Air Force Award. Rockey was also named alternate to the Grand Award, which is an automatic advancement to Internationals. Vanessa Rivera was awarded first place in Plant Science and was a recipient of $1,000 scholarship to Texas Tech University in the Plant and Soil Science Department.

Also in the Senior Division (10-12 grades), Lizzie Conger was awarded Honorable Mention in Plant Science. Michael Rockey was the recipient of the American Society of Safety Engineers Award.

In the 9th Grade Division, Sheena Mohebalian received third place in Energy and Transportation and Chandika Silva was the recipient of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers Award and third place in the American Meteorological Society Award.

Dawne Welch is the FHS Science Fair Coordinator.

“The Houston Science and Engineering Fair is the largest region in the state of Texas with over 2,000 participants.  We are very proud of all of our competitors.  This three day event can be quite grueling, and they honored our district with exceptional dignity and honor,” Welch said.
