News: 4 FHS Speech students win Transportation contest
posted: March 3, 2009

FHS students Megan Brann, Lesleigh Balkum, Kristi Board, and Johnathan Moore placed first in their respective grade levels recently in the 8th Annual School Bus Safety Speech Contest sponsored by the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation at Region IV.  They will compete at the state level in April.

The contest is intended to encourage high school students to be conscious of the importance of school bus safety and promote academic achievement. Through corporate sponsorships, financial assistance for educational scholarships and savings bonds will be awarded to the winners.

Students will be encouraged to compose and present an original speech based on the theme Big, Yellow and Built to Protect; Safety Features of My School Bus. Only one participant from each grade level (9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th) per public school district may register.

The state contest will take place in Waco on April 17, 2009.

Last year Friendswood High School senior Leanna Swain received first place in her division, received a $1000 scholarship and was named Best Overall Winner. Freshman Kristi Board was named to second place and received a $500 savings bond.
