News: NSOC site visits Westwood to determine national consideration
posted: March 31, 2009

Westwood Elementary welcomed two National Schools of Character (NSOC) site visitors recently.  Lauren Kelly from California and Kay Augustine from Minnesota spent some quality time with Westwood staff and community members as they shared the story of an amazing journey down Character Road.

They got a first-hand look at how seamless character and academics are interwoven at Westwood to educate the whole child.

Four student ambassadors, Tanner, Julia, Samantha, and Ian were chosen from many capable leaders to give tours and answer questions.  The Character Crew sat down with the visitors over lunch to field questions and fill in the details as did a group of about 36  parents, grandparents, and other stakeholders in an afternoon community meeting.

This is Westwood's third opportunity to showcase their students and character education philosophy in an effort to earn the title of National School of Character.

Visits to 26 other schools will also take place this spring.

A Blue Ribbon Panel will meet mid-May to decide which 10 schools merit this prestigious award this year.

“We thank our ambassadors as well as our community members for their part in our special day,” Counselor Barbara Gruener said.
