News: Record Turnout for Halloween in the Park
posted: November 3, 2008

Little ghosts, goblins, princesses and other characters flooded Stevenson Park on Thursday evening for the Friendswood Chamber of Commerce’s ninth annual “Halloween in the Park” event.  According to chamber president Carol Jones, “It’s amazing because we don’t publicize this event to any great extent and this was by far the largest turnout we have ever had.”

Costumed children brought their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles brothers and sisters to enjoy a fun evening in the park “trick-or- treating” for toys and candy and learning about various services in the community.

Friendswood ISD provided a decorated booth with candy and toys and displayed a banner featuring the Six Pillars of Character that are the foundation for all education grades pre-K through 12. FISD counselors, CLEAR (Clean Living Encouragement and Responsibility) sponsors, and student members provided treats as well as information for parents and youth about alcohol and substance abuse prevention. School staff working the event included: Sherry Green, Debbie Woodson, Allison Houston, Dara Watt, Carol Ross, Lisa Cudd, Jennifer Reed, Michelle Bowman, Stephanie Jones, and Kimberly Johnstone and Barbara Gruener. CLEAR sponsors included: Debbie Rogers, Nicole Hillman, Megan Marshall and Corey Dalton. Friendswood High School CLEAR member volunteers were: Kelly Smith, Kaylee Huff, and Kelsey Gutierrez. Friendswood Junior High CLEAR member helpers included: Presley Ditta, Ashley Morgan, Maddie McDonough, Kena McDonald, Bailey McKernan, Amy Thornton,Teresa Nguyen, Jenna Robertson, Emily Rives, Katie Cole, Samantha McHenry, Shelby Giles, Merrit Rowley, Nicole Rodriguez, Maddie Ehrlich, Addison Cobb, Melinda Russell, Jamie Winfrey, Austin delaRua, Alan McNatt, Corbin Moore, Karleigh Gutierrez, Trenton Moser, and Alec Roberts.

Students who sign up as members of CLEAR support activities pledge to participate in educational, social and service activities that are drug and alcohol-free and to help change norms about substance abuse. Students handed out treats with their slogan: Do I Make Myself CLEAR? as well as booklets for parents on dealing with the substance abuse issues.
