News: Windsong service project gets noticed by expert
posted: November 12, 2008

A recent article about Windsong Intermediate's service project "feeding the homeless" impressed Cathryn Berger Kaye, a keynote speaker that authored The Complete Guide to Service Learning. The importance of service learning for young students is an important topic to her.

Westwood Elementary Counselor Barbara Gruener and Westwood Principal Lynn Hobratschk attended a workshop with Kaye in Washington DC recently.

It was Gruener and Hobratschk that told Kaye about Windsong’s project.

Students in Autumn Bockart and Jermaine Sonnier’s classes put together a feed the homeless project after reading children’s book Maniac Magee

“At Cathryn Berger Kaye’s request, I sent her the eLook article and now Windsong is featured in an article by the expert." Here's the link

“You have to be really creative in the younger grades to create service-learning projects that work and keep service learning alive in the schools,” Gruener said. “Congrats to Autumn and Jermaine for a job well done!”

Cathryn Berger Kaye is an author, keynote speaker and workshop presenter. She is a National Service Learning consultant, recipient of the Inspirational Spirit Award Learn & Serve America 2005, author of The Complete Guide to Service Learning (Free Spirit Publishing 2004), Awarded Seal of Excellence by the Council for Service Learning Excellence and Strategies for Success: A Learning Curriculum that Serves.
