News: Students monitor watt usage at Cline
posted: October 13, 2008

Students in Margy Price’s class at Cline Elementary are proud to be part of the Watt Watcher patrol.  It is part of the Be Aware and Care campaign the class has initiated.

The class members go through the entire school three or four days a week checking on energy usage.

Cline Watt 1If the room is empty with the lights on, it is noted on a chart and the teacher or administrator gets a "Reminder" note to please conserve energy by turning off the lights when they leave the room.

If the lights are off when no one is there, it is also noted and the students leave a "Thank you!" note.

According to the National Energy Education Development, N.E.E.D. if someone leaves the room for more than two minutes, he/she will save energy by turning the lights off.

“Since we began our patrols in early September, we have definitely seen an improvement.  Way to go Cline!  We are learning to "Be Aware and Care!" Price said.Cline Watt 2

Be Aware and Care at Cline is funded by a $10,000 grant from BP Energy. The grant is part of the 2008 A+ for Energy series.

The money is used to improve and monitor the energy efficiency of Cline Elementary.  Students not only monitor the campus but also compare energy bills before and after new weatherstripping and window tinting are installed.

Also third graders will launch an education and awareness campaign to conserve energy across the community.  Technology purchased with the grant money allow the students to educate and assess all classes at Cline, with the CPS system (Classroom Performance System), a projector and document camera, along with scientific investigation tools.
