The equipment came about as part of a grant awarded FHS with $10,000 to purchase handheld computer devices and probes.
The grant was a British Petroleum (BP) A+ for Energy Grant.
Students at each grade level will use this equipment to conduct lab investigations into various types of energy and the efficiency of each type.
“It is our hope that these investigations will help them to make wise choices regarding their own energy usage and to increase their awareness of the impact of those choices on their environment,” Lawrence said.
As part of this educational experience, students will calculate their carbon footprint two times, once as a baseline at the beginning of the school year and once at the end of the school year, after all energy investigations are concluded.
Because October is National Energy Awareness Month, Lawrence is asking students to complete their initial carbon footprint during this time.
“We also invite our students to offer ideas for the FHS community to lower its carbon footprint, both at home and at school. These ideas will be shared on a monthly basis on our school website,” Lawrence said. |
